# Create and manage baseline

Admins can [create a baseline](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/create-and-manage-baseline#create) for each assignment and [manage it](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/create-and-manage-baseline#manage-baseline) if required.

A baseline serves as a reference point for comparing engagement survey responses. The system auto-generates a cycle period baseline, while admins can create a custom baseline to evaluate and measure employee engagement initiatives.

There are two types of baselines.

1. Cycle period baseline: This represents the *This Survey* baseline, where each question is associated with a favorable score. The system auto-generates it based on responses to each section, allowing you to compare responses from ended cycles.
2. Custom baseline: You can create and customize a baseline by assigning scores to each question. The system auto-generates the section score, allowing you to compare responses based on the custom baseline.

### **Create baseline**

You can create a baseline for each tile, which represents the entire table in analytics.

Navigate to **Survey** on the left pane.

1. In the *Ongoing Surveys* field, click **View All** on the right.

  2.   Select the **Engagement** tab and select an engagement survey where you want to create the baseline.

  3.   Go to the **Assignments** tab and click **Analytics** on an assignment.

  4.   Click the drop-down in the *Baseline* field and click **Create Baseline**.

  5.   Type the baseline title.

  6.   Enter the favorability scores for each question and click **CREATE**.

The system auto-generates the

- Overall score for all sections.
- Average of a section based on the scores that you set for each question.

### **Manage baseline**

You can manage the baselines that you create.

  4.   Follow steps [1 to 3](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/create-and-manage-baseline#step-one).

  5.   Click the drop-down in the *Baseline* field.

  6.   Click the **Edit ![edit grey-3](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/edit%20grey-3.png?width=20&height=20&name=edit%20grey-3.png)** or **Delete ![Delete Grey](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Delete%20Grey.png?width=20&height=20&name=Delete%20Grey.png) Icon** as required.

The system calculates the [heat map](https://help.theemployeeapp.com/view-engagement-survey-analytics?hsLang=en#heat-map) using the baseline as the reference score. Once the survey is completed, a heat map is generated automatically.
